School History

Heavilin Elementary is one of the newest landmarks on Heavilin Road in Valparaiso, Indiana.  Heavilin Elementary School opened its doors for the first time to the community on August 13, 2017 with Dr. Bonnie Stephens serving as the building principal.

Before the school was built, Heavilin road was where the Heavilin family resided. Mr. Ralph Heavilin’s parents lived on the road for over 60 years.  Ralph was a representative of the Valparaiso Post Office, and served on a committee that renamed the streets in Porter County when rural route addresses were changed to street names.  Heavilin Road was created in honor of the Heavilin family.  Ralph Heavilin graduated from Hayes Leonard Elementary School when it was a two room school house, and from Valparaiso High School in 1946.  The Heavilin family is honored to have a school named after their family and the road.
